number something or other in series of a number yet to be determined, where i don’t have one big thing to say, so i just write a post consisting of lots of little things to take up space.

french class reboot
i really want to learn to speak french. i really really do. but i think my brain is getting in the way.
i took french in high school. two years, in fact. and there’s a basis of french vocabulary that i retain from that.
but getting past that base is proving to be pretty difficult.

liquid lunch
how did anyone ever get any work done back in the fifties and sixties? back in the days when everyone had three martinis for lunch?
i have no idea. having had a three martini lunch today.

rasputina. not bad!
i’d been cranky about going to see this band. frankly, yesterday’s post was more an attempt to kick myself in the ass to try to enjoy an evening about which i was, at best, dubious.
well, who knew.
not only was rasputina not bad, they were very very good. in fact, i’d go so far as to say they were pretty close to brilliant.
i used to care a lot, as faith no more once cynically said, about music. i was a nightclub dj and went out every single night for years on end. but music lately?
strip club dude
i voted in new york city’s democratic primary this morning. i voted for kris glen, among others.
i did not vote for strip club dude. who?

vote for kris glen
i’ve decided to vote for kris glen.
who is she? hell if i know.
but she’s proven to me that she has more sense, or at least is backed by people with more sense, than anyone else i’ve seen running for any office in new york this year.
i should explain.

my last mchale’s burger?
i’m hoping it’s not true, or hoping for a reprieve, or hoping that someone gets some sense, or something.
mchale’s, a perfectly wonderful open secret of a bar, is set to close soon, according to the new york times, which by the way will make you pay $3.95 to read about it.
but trust me. it says that the building was sold and the new owners are kicking them out. which really ticks me off.

quick sunday thought
instead of enabling unlimited cell phone service in the new york subway, why don’t we enable 911 service only? that way, anyone who needs to use their cell phone for an emergency will be able to, but i will be spared the constant yammering.
the subway is the last cell-phone free area in new york, and i’d like to keep it that way. i enjoy the relative tranquility.
i realize that this isn’t financially feasible, because the only way that you’ll get cell phone service is if the installing companies can make a bundle off of it somehow.
but i can dream, can’t i?
7 versus L
we had a great time at coney island on friday. totonno’s pizza was excellent, the cyclone roller coaster was awesome, the baseball game was fun and the cyclones won, we split a yummy grilled burger during the game and a pistachio soft serve ice cream afterwards.
everything was perfect.
except for getting ripped off at the pick-up-a-duck stand.

nice long weekend
i have friday off. whoo hooo. so a nice long three-day weekend.
that’s the one thing i love about working in new york–summer fridays. for those who aren’t in the loop about this, and i wasn’t in the loop until i got here, lots of new york city businesses give their employees paid half-day early dismissal times on fridays between memorial day and labor day. my particular workgroup chooses to take the entire day every other friday, so there are always people in the office.
does any other area of the country do this? is it a big-city thing? not sure. all i know is, i love it and it’s one more reason to stay in new york, because i never had bonus paid vacation time anywhere else ever.
i think for the big shot types, it gives them a head start to the hamptons or whatever. as i have not yet closed on my southhampton mansion, i shall remain in the city on weekends.
and this weekend?

yuppie fool
stayed up too late last night. after midnight, which is late for me. i usually go to bed at 10:00, preceded by falling asleep at 9:00 in front of the tv.
anyway, that has nothing to do with anything, except to explain mood: exhausted.
we just got back from our local pub, which has smithwick’s on tap (a very nice brew, new to me, flavorful but a bit lighter than a guinness) and has great burgers.
and, in the corner, was the yuppie fool.

hot hot hot
it’s hot in nyc.
actually, it’s probably hot where you are too, unless you are in nome or something. and i know it’s hotter elsewhere, like phoenix and atlanta and wherever.
but, still, it’s damn hot.
and humid.

hutt of rutt
today i’m going to eat at rutt’s hut, which i saw on a tv show about hot dogs and is, coincidentally, in clifton, nj which is mere miles from my boss’s house, so she is taking me, and her husband and young daughter are going as well. and kirk too.
the hot dogs are deep fried. i’m hoping that there are other deep fried items as well…maybe a snickers bar. that would be optimal.

a better way
last night on the subway there was a probably homeless guy panhandling. there’s a lot more of that lately…it always goes up in the wintertime but this year it seems more than usual.
and this guy looked rougher than most. if i have change i sometimes give it to them, sometimes i don’t. don’t tell me they’ll just drink it away. most don’t and so what if they do? what, only rich people can have substance abuse problems? it’s his damn life, and if i want give money for food at the risk that it might not go for food, then it’s my damn life too. in this case, i’ll err on the side of life, as terri schiavo’s parents are so fond of saying.
anyway, i didn’t have change so i didn’t give him anything. but the guy standing next to me looked right at him, and in this louder than necessary voice says “there’s a better way, brother. you need to find jesus.”
and i stood there, wondering, as i honestly sometimes do, “what would jesus do?”

christmas at radio city
that’s where i was yesterday, instead of blogging like i should have been. well, i guess i could have done both, but i didn’t.
i was at radio city music hall to see the radio city christmas show, with the rockettes. with great seats, thanks to the in-laws.

gentrifying yuppie scumbags
this one goes out to the brave hero on the subway who stopped the homeless man from peeing in a bottle.
i’ll get there. it may take a while.
i like my neighborhood in new york city. it’s called inwood. for those of you who have a vision of manhattan as nothing but tall buildings and wide streets, you’d be surprised to see my area of manhattan, which is tall not buildings, but tall trees.

eating for good
a lovely postcard in my inbox, my actual physical inbox, at work–the tagline is “dining out just got more satisfying”. it’s from an organization called “action for hunger” which wants me to dine out on october 19th at certain new york restaurants. on this day, these certain restaurants will donate up to 20% of their sales to the problem of “global hunger.” my problem with this?
