so tonight is the big karaoke-fest with people from work. i know, it sounds lame, but they are all people i really like, and i haven’t been out to have a drink (or two) for a while, and i can’t sing but i don’t care, so why not?
i’m meeting a group of people at a place called sortie, which i’ve never been to, and we are all proceeding from there to koreatown, which is the mid-30s in manhattan, and we are going to some karaoke place that no one knows the name of because evidently the places all change names every few days or so.

i took the day off work yesterday with a mild case of the flu. i’m still dragging today, but at least i felt well enough to come to work, because i had a buttload of work to get caught up on.

first off, apologies on behalf on my hosting service which has yet to apologize to me–the site was down yesterday for at least 24 hours through no fault of mine. there are several of you getting your daily queerspace fix, a number sure to rise into two figures anytime now, and yesterday must have been hell for you.
i love the picture above. i blatantly stole it from a mac rumor site posting–it’s steve jobs playing around with his newly introduced photobooth software. it reminds me a lot of kai’s power goo, a little program i had for my student’s macs years ago, but that was so long ago that i’m sure everyone has forgotten about it and the concept of photobooth seems fresh and fun once more.
anyway, i made some predictions about wednesday’s big apple event. actually it was in california, not new york. har har har. let’s check in and see how i did.

the apple “one more thing” press event starts at 1:00pm est today. and then the wait will be over.
why do i care? i’m not sure. it’s not like i’m going to buy anything that is introduced. at least i don’t think i am. i guess it’s just that i like rooting for the underdog. after all, i’m a mets fan. and apple is the underdog, and microsoft is the yankees, and i’d like to see apple hit a home run and knock the wind out of microsoft’s sails.
too much to hope for. too many mixed metaphors. but it still interests me, and there’s always hope.

one side benefit to switching from my pc back to my beloved mac is the reawakening of my mac fanaticism.
yes, i’m an apple fanboy. have been since 1986 and the mac pluses i bought for my journalism classroom, except for my recent brief sojourn away from the fold. and there’s nothing like the evangelical community that surrounds the company and its products.
and evidently next week, there will be lots of new reasons to be fanatical and celebratory.

i’m from floral city, florida, in a small county called citrus county. it’s in northwest central florida, on the gulf coast. i left when i was 17 and, other than visits to my mom when she still lived there, have pretty much never looked back. i did go back twice for high school reunions, which were fun, but those were just one-night visits.
there must be something in the water, though. i’m glad i’m out of there.
even living in new york city, i seem to see lots of negative news about various locations in citrus county. it may be that i just notice them more.
but i don’t think so. the number of odd news items you see seems out of proportion to the small size of the county and its population.
take this latest example, for example.

yesterday, that is.
the mets won, and that was the bright spot. even though it doesn’t ultimately matter in the postseaon scheme of things, the mets will go out on a high note, above .500 and with several young players that we’ll be seeing for years.
but the red sox lost, and even though it looks at this point like they’ll get the wild card, i really wanted the red sox and the indians to get together and win some games and send the yankees home for october. maybe next year. but i guess having the yankees in the post season is good for the tv ratings and thus good for baseball, so i’ll be a bit magnanimous and congratulate the yankees. grudingly. they got the job done again–i suppose you can’t deny that.
and the gators lost big time. 31-3. or i guess that should be 3-31. to alabama. that’s college football, which i like but not as much as baseball. not nearly.
it’s going to be a long winter.
i got tickets to tonight’s mets game through a contact at work. thanks, contact at work! they are great seats–field box level, right up front, off to the third base side a bit, so you have to crane your neck a bit, but who am i to complain?
and, even though the game means absolutely nothing to any of the teams in postseason contention, i’m still glad i’ll be there.
the united states is a third world country.
at least in my opinion it is. but what about more objective measures? how do we stack up?

other than when she was in “the color purple”. she was great in that. but it was before she was “oprah” in all capital letters which i don’t use on this site.

dell has introduced their latest “ipod killer”. it’s called the “dell ditty”. as dave barry is so fond of saying, i am not making this up.
i am also not making up this unfortunate website which dell has apparently created to promote this unfortunately named product.
honestly, i thought this was a parody site. i’m still not sure that it isn’t. if i’m missing some joke here, please let me know. is this loser guy in a track suit supposed to make me want to buy a dell ditty? even al sharpton doesn’t wear these anymore.
and can you picture the conversation if you actually had one of these things?
