grease

sometimes you just gotta have it.

most days i eat a very healthy diet. after all, i was a vegetarian for over ten years, and was even completely vegan for about three of those, and even though i’ve given up on that, i still don’t eat much meat. the majority of our meals at home are vegetarian, and when we do have meat, it’s most likely kirk and i splitting a can of tuna atop a salad, or a bit of salt pork in the green beans, and stuff like that.

today, though, i got the craving.

let’s go mets

wow.

usually a baseball team that scores 14 runs in a game will lose the next game. usually by a score of 2-1 or something like that.

but the mets have done it two nights in a row. on the road. they said on tv (i’m going to get the exact figures wrong) that no team has won two consecutive games on the road by more than 13 runs since 1930-something or something like that.

wow.

i think i gotta believe.

php conversion

i converted my greymatter blog to php.

i have no idea what that means, or what effect it has, or how things are different.

or why i even did it in the first place, except that i had a few spare moments at work and gave it a try. but i did, and now my site is php, instead of html, and everything works just as it did before.

so i can now say my site is more better, except that i will be using poor grammar if i do so.

7 versus L

we had a great time at coney island on friday. totonno’s pizza was excellent, the cyclone roller coaster was awesome, the baseball game was fun and the cyclones won, we split a yummy grilled burger during the game and a pistachio soft serve ice cream afterwards.

everything was perfect.

except for getting ripped off at the pick-up-a-duck stand.

nice long weekend

i have friday off. whoo hooo. so a nice long three-day weekend.

that’s the one thing i love about working in new york–summer fridays. for those who aren’t in the loop about this, and i wasn’t in the loop until i got here, lots of new york city businesses give their employees paid half-day early dismissal times on fridays between memorial day and labor day. my particular workgroup chooses to take the entire day every other friday, so there are always people in the office.

does any other area of the country do this? is it a big-city thing? not sure. all i know is, i love it and it’s one more reason to stay in new york, because i never had bonus paid vacation time anywhere else ever.

i think for the big shot types, it gives them a head start to the hamptons or whatever. as i have not yet closed on my southhampton mansion, i shall remain in the city on weekends.

and this weekend?

quicken for mac sucks

i’ve used quicken for windows to do my home finances for years. many more than ten years. and i’ve paid my bills online for more years than that. i used check free when it was a standalone product and i uploaded my payments on a 2400 baud modem. and my first versions of quicken came on floppy disks.

so i know whereof i speak when i say that intuit, the distributor of quicken for mac can. kiss. my. annoyed. ass.

yuppie fool

stayed up too late last night. after midnight, which is late for me. i usually go to bed at 10:00, preceded by falling asleep at 9:00 in front of the tv.

anyway, that has nothing to do with anything, except to explain mood: exhausted.

we just got back from our local pub, which has smithwick’s on tap (a very nice brew, new to me, flavorful but a bit lighter than a guinness) and has great burgers.

and, in the corner, was the yuppie fool.

steve jobs is my new hero

loving the new mac mini, with one slight quandary remaining.

i’d forgotten how easy it all was. i had kvetched with the salespeople at tekserve, bombarding them with a million “what if” questions.

what if my cable modem won’t connect? how will i then get drivers for my peripherals? how do i configure my mail and internet access? will my printer print? will my scanner scan? will my mouse mouse?

and so on.

i’m such a fool.

switching to a mac

yes i’m switching to a mac. more in a moment.

but first, i saw the movie “the aristocrats” this weekend, and i’m still making up my mind on the ranking, but i’m pretty sure it was the funniest movie i’ve ever seen, and just might be my favorite movie of the year thus far. and in addition to being riotously funny, it’s brilliantly insightful about the process of comedy and by inference, about freedom of speech.

but my god is it filthy. don’t see it unless you are completely unable to be offended, which i am not able to be. offended.

but do see it if you are worried about your right to be offended, because this movie is still flying under the radar. but it will eventually be topic one in sunday church and on fox news. and nothing would be a bigger statement against that crap than big box office numbers, which this movie is getting already. after it’s first week of release, it’s on the list of all-time biggest box office by theater–$65,000 per theater in only 4 theaters–which makes me very very happy. go go go dirty movie!

oh yes, the mac.

hutt of rutt

today i’m going to eat at rutt’s hut, which i saw on a tv show about hot dogs and is, coincidentally, in clifton, nj which is mere miles from my boss’s house, so she is taking me, and her husband and young daughter are going as well. and kirk too.

the hot dogs are deep fried. i’m hoping that there are other deep fried items as well…maybe a snickers bar. that would be optimal.

as i suspected

this whole scotus thing is going to be anticlimactic.

even though i knew all along that this guy was going to be approved, or voted in or on, or whatever, i still held out some hope for a few fireworks to entertain me in the interim. but everyone, or enough-one, is falling all over themselves to give approval, either direct or tacit.

and the only people who are getting het up are the people with a vested interest in interest-bearing investments of fundraising dollars that they want to pad.

only one thing is going to be of interest to me in this whole process.

scotus

well, i guess i need to weigh in on the whole supreme court thing, even though no one really knows much about this guy, and even though if i tell you what i really think, which i will, you’ll probably be aghast.

scotus, by the way, is (s)upreme (c)ourt (o)f (t)he (u)nited (s)tates, not to be confused with potus, who is my stuffed monkey, at least he is until all the cats die and we get a new cat which will be named potus if i have any say in matters. then we will have not potus but poti.

anyway, the shocking thing is that i don’t give a good goddamn if this guy is confirmed or not, and i kind of hope he is confirmed. and here’s why, and then you can be aghast and tell me i’m ignorant and deluded and uncaring and illogical and whatnot.

cheap ploy for attention

i like the gothamist.com site–it’s a nice compendium of nyc stuff, even if the “royal we” point of view (“gothamist is tired of all this crap, etc.”) gets annoying.

today they had a story on charlie and the chocolate factory that was basically a rant about how people can’t behave in the movies anymore.

and a site that usually gets a few comments per story got 67 comments for this one within, like, 5 minutes. so i figured i’d rant about this too, and see what happens.
